INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

The 7‑7‑7 Rule for Game Design breaks down the creative process into three simple layers that help designers focus on what truly matters: player goals, core mechanics, and moment‑to‑moment engagement. Through examples, exercises, and real‑world insights, the book shows how constraints can unlock creativity and lead to more polished, intentional game experiences. Whether you're prototyping your first idea or refining a complex system, the 7‑7‑7 rule offers a reliable guide for making design decisions that feel purposeful and player‑centered.

Better than I expected

This is the one to get if you are serious about game design.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.

Almost excellent

Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. The chapters on game design are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.

Outstanding introduction

Excellent from start to finish. No filler, no padding.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with game design.
